KYBELLA® is a FDA-approved medication used to reduce the fat under the chin (double chin). KYBELLA® is also the one and only non-surgical injectable medication used to improve the appearance of the jawline and chin.
In our bodies, humans naturally produce a chemical known as deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is normally used to break down dietary fat. KYBELLA® is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid which permanently breaks down fat cells where injected.
When KYBELLA® is injected into the area under the chin, the active ingredient melts the fat cells away. The fatty molecules are released as the fat cell lining melts away. The free fat molecules are then absorbed by the body and eliminated naturally.
Even after significant weight loss and exercise, getting rid your double chin can be challenging. For some, the double chin fat can be very frustrating, especially when inherited as a family trait. Previously, the only way to address the double chin was to have surgery with either a neck lift or liposuction. Both operations, can lead to significant discomfort and a prolonged recovery. We now have the first and only non-surgical solution for the double chin in KYBELLA®. This medication is administered in minutes with minimal downtime and a quick return to your daily life activities.
KYBELLA® melts away the excess fat from the under-the-chin area to reveal more definition and slimmer contours. With the disappearance of the double chin, a more youthful and beautiful profile is exposed for our patients.
KYBELLA® is the first and only FDA-approved non-surgical treatment that contours and improves the appearance of the double chin.
Our complimentary consultations for KYBELLA® take about 30 to 45 minutes to complete. We use this time to carefully examine you and discuss your goals while assessing whether you are a good candidate for KYBELLA® treatments. The actual treatment takes only 15 to 20 minutes.
To begin the injection process, your skin is first cleansed with an antiseptic. We encourage using chilled ice packs before and during the injections. We carefully map out the area of treatment and will tell you how many vials are required to appropriately treat your under-the-chin area and neck. Patients experience some improvement after each injection, but most patients will require repeated treatments to achieve the desired results. Most patients need 2 to 4 total treatment sessions for ideal results. Each treatment session is done 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Most patients experience some pain, which is usually rated 6 to 8 on a scale of 10. This discomfort can last 6 to 8 hours starting about halfway through the injection session. Icing and an over-the-counter pain medication helps tremendously with discomfort.
All patients experience swelling. This can be extensive in some patients. The more fat you have, the more vials are used, and the more swelling you can expect. Some patients will swell more than others in the area below the chin. Swelling peaks 20 to 30 hours after injection and is largely gone by 48-72 hours after the procedure. Some of the swelling can be seen to go into the upper chest. Icing is the best medicine to reduce swelling.
After a few days, many patients also notice the treated area starts to feel like a gel. This “gel” feeling is followed by a hardening of the area and then the solidified fat breaks into bits, called nodules. These “nodules” are normal even though it bothers most patients and gradually disappear over several months. Less common, some patients experience a mild discomfort when swallowing solid foods and a bit of a hoarse voice.
Patients will also develop numbness in the treated area. This gets better within 2 months. Patients also have tenderness-to-the-touch in the area for 1 to 2 months. This is not severe enough to interfere with daily life activities, exercise and working.
Approximately a month after the procedure, most people have a well-defined reduction in fat and some tightening of skin in the under-the-chin area. This typically looks like a more defined jawline and slimmer face.
